Hi, piano lovers. This is pianist Keunyoung again with piano VST review. Today I want to talk about True Keys American which is one of the True Keys piano series from VI Labs. Steinway Model D was sampled for this VST and of course, its sound and expressions are amazingly captured.

Like Ravenscroft 275 which I reviewed last time, it has a crystal clear tone and warm body sound. For those who are sick and tired of Ivory 2 piano’s sound, go grab one of VI Labs pianos. It may satisfy your diverse piano tastes.

It adopted UVI workstation as the sampler and you need an iLok account to activate and run it. For VI Labs products, you don’t need hardware dongle keys. Online iLok account is all you need for the activation. I have some piano samples run on UVI workstation, I can surely say that this sample engine has a really unique expression. I can’t tell you clearly the difference of the sound compared to Kontakt samples, all pianos run by UVI workstation that I have used, has a very clean and expressive tone. I don’t know if this character is coming from the sampler or the VST itself, but for sure, its sound quality always exceeds the average sample sounds in the market.

Well, the sound. As you can see the UI below, it looks very intuitive and doesn’t provide many options as you see in other sample libraries. Also, it doesn’t have EQ settings so that you need an extra plugin if you want to maneuver EQs. But it just sounds great and you can just open the VST and play right away without any tone adjustments.

This one sampled Steinway model D, which means it has worm body sound in the mid and low part. Comparing with Ravenscroft 275, the Ravenscroft 275 has a clearer tone than True Keys American. But True Keys American's overall body sound is warmer and more firm than the Ravenscroft 275. Especially True Keys low tone is so deep and the tone sustains long enough to keep you stay on a certain note for a while. When I play in low part, the harmonics clearly stay so that I could feel the firm feeling. By default, the key noise knob is off, but I strongly recommend you to turn on this knob when playing. Especially in high notes, its key noise sounds just awesome.

And also this piano has 3 mic perspectives.

1.Close 2. Player 3. Room 

If you want a fuller piano tone, just turn on all 3 microphones and enjoy the pleasant breeze it delivers.

In the sample video, I played “Silent night, holy night” rearranged by me. Steinway piano delivers special feelings and expressions when I play jazz or pop scores. Unlike Yamaha grand piano’s clean and clear tones, Steinway gives rather warmer tones in general.

Due to its firm, clean and clear sounds, it might be well blended in a mix with other instruments, but of course, solo play is just brilliant.

아이보리의 대항마 VI Labs True Keys American 피아노 가상악기 리뷰/추천

다시 한 번 피아노 가상악기 리뷰로 찾아온 피아니스트 송근영 입니다. 이번에 리뷰할 피아노는 VI Labs에서 출신된 True Keys 시리즈 중 American에 대한 리뷰입니다. 지난번에는 VI Labs사의 Ravenscroft 275에 대한 리뷰를 드렸는데 이 회사의 제품이 전반적으로 질감이나 사운드가 굉장히 좋다는 느낌을 받았습니다.

이 악기는 Steinway 피아노를 샘플링한 악기이며, 정말 스타인웨이 다운 소리를 마음껏 내줍니다. 2014년에 출시된 악기로 출시된 지가 좀 되었음에도 불구하고 요즘 나오는 가상악기들에 비해 전혀 질적으로 밀리지 않는 느낌입니다.

이 악기도 샘플러를 UVI Workstation을 사용을 합니다. 우연의 일치인지는 모르지만 이 샘플러를 사용하는 거의 대부분의 가상악기는 소리가 정말 좋더라고요. 이 샘플러의 엔진이 좋아서인지 아니면 이 샘플러를 사용하는 가상악기 회사의 기술이 좋아서인지는 모르겠지만 저도 개인적으로 콘탁으로 샘플을 구동할 때보다 UVI Workstation을 사용할 때 램 사용량도 적고 더 쾌적하게 작업을 했던 것 같아요.

아래 사진을 보시면 아시겠지만 GUI도 굉장히 직관적으로 되어 있어서 저 한 화면으로 모든 걸 컨트롤이 가능합니다. 다만 EQ 조절 기능은 없어서 별도 플러그인으로 만져야되겠지만 기본 사운드 자체가 워낙 좋아 특별히 EQ 부분은 전혀 손대지 않았습니다. 위에도 얘기했듯이 같은 회사에서 나온 Ravenscroft 275에 대해서 리뷰를 드렸었는데 같은 회사의 제품임에도 불구하고 확연히 다른 색깔을 보여주고 있습니다. True Keys American은 먼저 스타인웨이 피아노 답게 중저음이 굉장히 탄탄합니다. 특히 저음 영역대의 탄탄하고 묵직한 소리는 다른 어느 피아노 가상악기에서 찾기 힘든 소리입니다. 소리를 들어보시면 아시겠지만 중저음에서의 연주에서도 탄탄함을 그대로 유지한채 뭉치는 소리가 전혀 들리지 않아 감정 표현을 하기에 더 없이 좋네요. 그만큼 연주할 수 있는 범위도 넓어져서 앞으로도 자주 사용을 하게 될 악기 같습니다. 그리고 저는 Key Nosie를 굉장히 중요하게 생각하는 연주자인데 이 악기의 Key Noise 표현은 정말 예술입니다. 특히 고음 부분에서 들릴듯 말듯 하는 Key Noise 표현이 제 마음을 살살 녹이네요. 피아노 연주자들의 꿈의 피아노인 스타인웨이 피아노를 직접 가질 수는 없지만 이렇게 가상으로 소유하는 것도 나름의 위로가 될 거라고 생각이 됩니다 ㅎㅎ

첨부된 샘플은 예전 크리스마스 시즌에 올렸던 곡이었고 연말 분위기 좀 내볼겸 "고요한 밤 거룩한 밤" 을 Smooth Jazz 느낌이 나게 편곡을 하고 연주를 해보았습니다. 확실히 이런 스무스 재즈나 뉴에이지 장르에 있어서 스타인웨이 피아노는 야마하의 그랜드 피아노들과는 전혀 다른 소리를 내주네요. 저는 주로 팝음악을 연주를 하다 보니 야마하 그랜드 피아노 소리를 자주 사용하는 편이지만 스타인웨이 피아노가 주는 뉴에이지적인 느낌도 굉장히 좋아합니다. 밴드 음악에서의 믹스는 어떨지는 잘 모르겠지만 확실히 솔로 피아노에서는 이 악기만큼 좋은 소리를 내줄 수 있는 악기는 몇 안 된다고 생각합니다. 그만큼 기본기가 탄탄한 악기이니만큼 제 리뷰 참고하셔서 구매하실 의사가 있으신 분들은 참고하시기 바랍니다.
