What is your favorite piano maker? Steinway? YAMAHA? Fazioli? Bosendorfer? KAWAI? Most of the time, I prefer the sound of Yamaha pianos, but sometimes I prefer other pianos than YAMAHA. Because our piano tastes depend on the context of the music we want to express.

When I play a new age song, usually Steinway and Yamaha's pianos are good due to its clear and warm timbre. But when I play somewhat fast and hard songs, Fazioli piano is suitable for me.

The reason I’m talking about this is that we can’t tell which piano is the best of all time. It totally depends on your taste and the context of the music.

Many people say that Synthogy Ivory 2 piano series is the best piano VST in the market now, but before taking this, you need to know your personal piano taste first. I agree that this piano VST is one of the best piano VSTs but I can sure say that it is not all round piano.

First of all, it sampled legendary New York Steinway D which I prefer than Hamburg Steinway.

About the sound, as other Ivory series pianos, it has a warm timbre throughout the whole range. But Ivory has a very unique tone in all pianos Synthogy sampled. It just sounds like Kurzweil piano tone in some mid notes which I don’t like. But regardless of this Ivory’s unique tone, its overall warmth is so great. Many people say this American Concert D is the best-sampled piano among Ivory 2 piano series which I totally agree with.

And it has a really good dynamic range so that I didn't notice any compressed sound in high velocities. IMHO, Ivory 2 pianos have the best dynamic range so far.

About the activation, you don’t need the USB dongle to activate it. Just simply download Ivory 2.5 and iLok manager and the activation will be done in few seconds.

About the GUI, I'm always wondering why they don't hire a graphic designer. It doesn’t look fancy compared to other VST's UIs.

In the sample video, I played the First Noel which is one of my Christmas album “Merry Christmas My Dear”. For this kind of soft songs, Ivory 2 American Concert D suits really well.

피아노 가상악기의 왕 Synthogy Ivory 2 피아노 가상악기 리뷰

제가 요즘 스타인웨이 피아노가 샘플링된 피아노 가상악기에 빠져서 여러 악기를 만져보고 있는 중입니다. 때마침 블랙프라이데이, 사이버먼데이, 크리스마스 세일 기간이라 아내의 잔소리를 무릅쓰고 열심히 악기 지르는 재미에 살고 있네요. ^^; 제가 아내를 설득할 때는 3억짜리 피아노를 단 돈 150달러에 살 수 있다고 꼬시는 편인데 차라리 150달러 쓰는 걸 모아서 진짜 피아노를 하나 사라고 하네요 ㅎ 그만큼 많이 지르기도 했습니다. ^^;

아무튼 제가 리뷰를 올리는 이 Synthogy 사의 Ivory2 American Concert D가 올 해 마지막 가상악기 구입이 될 것 같네요.

 첫번째로 말씀드릴 것은 Ivory2.5 부터는 USB iLOK 키가 필요 없게 되어 iLOK 계정 만으로도 인증이 가능하게 되었습니다. 사실 이 악기 구입 전에 USB iLOK 키가 필요한지 많이 알아봤었거든요. USB iLOK 인증을 싫어하시는 분들은 반드시 Ivory 2.5로 업그레이드 하시기 바랍니다.

아래 사진을 보시면 알겠지만 Ivory 2.5로 업그레이드 되면서 UI에 보라색 폰트들이 좀 추가가 되었어요. 전 그 전 버전을 사용해 본 적이 없기 때문에 기능상으로 어떤 변화가 있었는지는 모르겠지만 아무래도 최신 버전이 제일 좋기는 하겠죠?

그 다음 사운드로 넘어가 보겠습니다. 일단 Ivory 2의 사운드는 말하기가 입 아플 정도로 굉장히 많은 분들에 의해 검증이 된 소리입니다. 특히 이 Amercian Concert D의 경우에는 심지어 Ivory2 Piano 시리즈 보다 더 극찬을 받고 있는 악기입니다. 저도 이 악기를 구입하기 전에 유튜브에서 굉장히 많은 소개 영상과 샘플 영상을 듣고 구입을 결정하게 되었는데 확실히 Ivory2 Piano 시리즈 3개를 구입하는 것보다 American Concert D 1개를 가지고 있는게 더 이득이고 활용 가치도 높은 것 같습니다.

그동안의 아이보리 시리즈가 그래왔던 것처럼 이번 American Concert D도 굉장히 따뜻한 음색을 가지고 있습니다. 어쩌면 이 부분에서 호불호가 분명히 갈릴 수 있겠는데 주로 Smooth Jazz나 뉴에이지를 연주하는 저에게 있어서는 이 따뜻함이 굉장히 큰 장점으로 다가옵니다. 이 악기의 Warmth 세팅이 좋다고 해서 절대로 사운드의 명료함이 떨어지는 것도 아닙니다. 그냥 좋고 이쁜 소리를 마구 내주네요.

지난 번 제가 리뷰를 올린 The Hammersmith Pro와 사운드를 잠깐 비교하자면 Hammersmith는 남성적이고 American Concert D는 좀 더 여성적인 소리를 내준다는 표현이 맞을 것 같아요. 그만큼 예쁘고 정제된 소리를 마구 뿜어줍니다.

 첨부된 샘플 영상은 연말 분위기가 되니 크리스마스 노래들이 많이 귀에 들어와 The First Noel를 조용하고 차분하게 한 번 연주해 보았습니다.

그리고 이 부분을 저만 느낀건지는 잘 모르겠지만 Ivory가 기본적으로 제공하는 볼륨이 상당히 작더라고요. 여기저기서 Gain 값을 많이 올리고 Dynamic에서 L2를 불러와서 음압을 상당히 많이 올렸는데도 여전히 좀 작게 느껴지네요. 혹시 이 악기에 대해 볼륨을 키울 좋은 방법이 있으면 꼭 알려주시면 정말 감사하겠습니다.

그리고 아시는 분이 추천을 해줘서 리버브는 Waves H Reverb를 사용했는데 피아노 잔향감을 살리는 데는 이만한 리버브가 없네요. 정말 만족하면서 잘 쓰고 있고 앞으로 작업하는 모든 피아노 음색에 이 리버브를 사용하게 될 것 같네요.
