Hello piano lovers. This is pianist Keunyoung Song again with another latest piano sample library.
First of all, I'm so happy that I needed to pay only 10 USD for this amazing piano library thanks to Christmas promotion from Embertone. Please subscribe to Embertone for future promotions as they usually send the email to subscribers first.
This VST is a light version. So there are some limits in this VST. The biggest limit is the velocity. The light version has 12 velocities, but the full version has 36 velocities per notes. There is a huge gap in playability and the expression. And also it doesn't support Una Corda option.
FYI, you need to change the "nict" filename due to some license issue with Steinway & Sons I guess. You will receive an email like below right after the purchase. So please follow the instruction before loading it into your Kontakt.

Rename "Walker 1955 Steinway D.nicnt" to "Walker 1955 Concert D.nicnt" (or "Walker 1955 Steinway D Lite.nicnt" to "Walker 1955 Concert D Lite.nicnt" if you have the Lite version).
About the activation, please activate in Native Access with the code given in the first email after purchase. They provide "Continuata" download code and you should use this code for Native Access activation. After this, a beautiful Kontakt library image will show up in your Kontakt library rack.
The most important thing, let's talk about the sound. Despite the velocity limit, it sounds so full, rich and warm at the same time. This is my first impression. Especially when you go to the "Color" tab, there is a "SWEETENING" option in the middle of the panel. Just switch on, close your eyes and just enjoy the magic of this sweetening sound. Suddenly stereo range broadens and warm low-mid registers come up from the bottom.
One of the unique features of this VST is "staccato" mode. I have never seen this option in any other piano VSTs I have used. There is a big difference in tone when you switch on this mode. You can also map this mode to your footswitch for live performances.
Let's compare this with another latest Steinway sample library Production Voices Concert Grand Compact. Both of them sound awesome, but characteristics differ a lot. Walker D is warm and PV Concert Grand is clear. IMHO, Walker D sounds like Spectrasonics Keyscape, PV Concert Grand like VI Labs Ravenscroft 275. Anyhow, I like both of them. If you are not sure what to buy between these two, just go for both. You may not regret. If you are interested in PV Concert Grand too, please check my review below.
Are you a big fan of Spectrasonics Keyscape? You may like this VST too. It just sounds like Keyscape Steinway version(FYI, Keyscape sampled Yamaha C7 grand). Rich, full, warm tones throughout the whole registers. Please check out my review for the Keyscape too if interested.
In the sample video, I played my own song "You are my angel" from my 4th album "Sweet Dreams" which you can listen in Apple music, Spotify and YouTube. My 2-year-daughter is the biggest source of my music all the time. My music is all about her and my family.
About the settings for the video, please check below images. I only increased the main volume to 0.0db and used Waves L1 Ultramaximizer. And no additional plug-ins and velocity curve maneuver. Ah, I switched on the "SWEETENING" option, of course.
I think Embertone made a really good deal by releasing this light version. Only 49 USD without any promotions. Almost nothing to lose even if you don' like it. But I will definitely purchase the full version with all mics(Totally 200 GB) when next promotion is ready as I had a pretty good impression from the lite version.
The only con for this VST is the limited velocities as mentioned above. What can we expect more from the 10 $ library? But you can taste its full version's beauty enough with this light one.

10달러 맞아? Embertone Walker D Lite 피아노 가상악기 리뷰/추천
피아노를 사랑하시는 분들 안녕하세요 ^^ 오늘도 피아노 가상악기 리뷰로 찾아온 피아니스트 송근영 입니다.오늘 리뷰를 해볼 악기는 가장 최근에 출시된 악기로 Production Voices Concert Grand와 더불어 해외 피아노 포럼에서도 많은 얘기가 오가는 악기이기도 합니다. 바로 Embertone Walker D Lite 피아노 가상악기로 정가는 49 USD이나 연말 프로모션을 받아서 단 돈 10 USD에 구입을 한 악기입니다. 치킨 한 마리도 되지 않는 가격입니다. 사실 50 USD 밑으로 가격이 책정되면 저는 무조건 뒤도 보지 않고 지르고 봅니다 ㅎㅎ
이 악기는 Steinway Model D를 샘플링을 하였습니다. 개인적으로 제가 소장하고 사용하는 악기들 중에 Steinway 샘플 피아노 비율이 거의 70% 가까이 되는 것 같습니다. 그만큼 많은 사람들이 좋아하는 피아노이다보니 샘플링도 제일 많이 되고 있는 것 같아요.
이 악기는 Embertone 홈페이지에서 직접 구입을 했는데, 처음 들어가시는 분은 회원가입 및 로그인 하는 곳이 없어서 한참을 찾았을 거에요. 저도 그랬습니다. ㅠㅠ 이 회사는 별도로 회원가입 절차가 없고 이메일로 구분을 하여 자체적으로만 관리를 하는 것 같습니다. 가상악기 쪽에서는 아직은 중소기업 정도의 크기인 것 같습니다.
구입을 하면 이메일이 바로 전송이 되는데, 중요한 것이 nict 파일명을 수정을 해야 됩니다. 아마 스타인웨이와 라이센스 문제가 있었던 것 같습니다. 아래와 같이 바꿔주시고 Native Access에서 Activation Code 입력 하셔서 인증을 하시면 컨탁 랙에서 라이브러리 이미지가 생성이 됩니다.

이 악기는 라이트 버전입니다. 풀 버전은 클로즈 마이크 버전과 그 외 마이크별 샘플을 별도로 판매를 하는데 전부 다 구입을 하면 약 200 GB의 엄청난 양의 라이브러리입니다. 지난번 제가 리뷰했던 Production Grand Concert Grand Gold가 150 GB였는데 이 놈 보다더 더 한 놈입니다 ㅎㅎ
라이트 버전이다 보니 제약이 좀 있습니다. 아무래도 제일 큰 제약은 벨로시티 입니다. 각 노트별 벨로시티가 12개 밖에 안 되다 보니 다이나믹한 연주는 사실 좀 어렵습니다. 또한 Una Corda 옵션을 지원하지 않습니다. 대신 라이트 버전 자체만으로도 이 악기의 풀 버전의 맛을 보기에는 더없이 충분하다고 생각을 합니다. 디폴트 상태에서도 소리가 굉장히 따뜻하지만 두번째 "Color"탭에 있는 "SWEETENING" 옵션을 켜게 되면 스테레오 레인지가 넓어지면서 따뜻함이 한 층 더 업그레이드가 됩니다. 이거 켜놓고 눈감고 연주하고 있으면 정말 기분이 좋아집니다. 다만 고음역 대의 명료함과 소리의 탄탄함이 좀 부족해서 명료한 피아노 톤을 원하시는 분들에게는 다소 맞지 않을 수도 있습니다.
어찌 보면 이 악기의 라이벌일 수도 있는 PV Concert Grand와 비교를 해보고자 합니다. 두 악기 모두 Steinway Model D를 샘플링 하였지만 그 성격은 눈에 띄게 다릅니다. 실제 두 개를 비교하면서 연주를 해보면 전혀 다른 악기를 연주하는 것 같은 느낌이 듭니다. 물론 샘플링한 피아노의 제작년도와 녹음 환경이 다르기도 하겠지만 샘플링한 회사의 성향 자체가 완전히 다르다 보니 전혀 다른 톤의 피아노 소리가 각각 나와줍니다. Embertone Walker D가 따뜻하고 묵직한 반면에 PV Concert Grand는 명료하고 알맹이가 탄탄한 소리를 내줍니다. 개인적으로 드는 느낌은 전자는 Keyscape과 비슷한 톤을, 후자는 Ravenscroft 275와 비슷한 톤을 내주는 것 같습니다.
다시 말해 성향의 차이이지 이 두 악기의 우열을 가리기는 정말로 어려울 것 같습니다. 두 악기 모두 라이트(컴팩트) 버전을 가지고 있기 때문에 풀 버전 구입 전에 한 번 구입해서 본인에게 맞는 톤인지 직접 테스트 해보시는 것도 좋습니다. 라이트 버전은 가격도 크게 부담이 안 되고 가볍게 사용하기 좋기 때문에 후에 풀 버전을 사시더라도 라이트 버전의 악기를 자주 불러오게 되니 한 번 구매해 보시는 것을 추천합니다. 참고로 제 Production Voices Concert Grand 리뷰가 궁금하신 분은 아래 링크 참고해 보시기 바랍니다.
이 악기의 기능 중 다른 피아노 가상악기들과 차별이 되는 기능이 있는데 바로 "staccato" 기능입니다. 아직까지 스타카토를 별도로 지원하는 피아노는 보지 못했던 것 같아요. 별도 맵핑도 가능해서 저도 풋스위치 하나 구입해서 실제 연주에도 사용을 해 볼 예정입니다.
이 악기의 유일한 단점은 위에 언급한 것처럼 라이트 버전이다 보니 벨로시티가 많이 제한적입니다. 10 USD 짜리 사면서 엄청난 다이나믹을 바라는 건 너무 하는거겠죠? 또 한가지 연주하면서 느낀 단점 중 하나가 간헐적으로 서스테인 사용시 의도하지 않았던 여러 음의 마찰음 같은 것이 들립니다. 마치 스피커에서 피드백이 뜨는 것 처럼요. 이 부분은 PV Concert Grand Compact 버전에서도 느꼈던 부분이기도 합니다. 그 외 사운드 적인 부분은 제 부족한 귀로는 흠 잡을 곳이 없네요.
첨부된 샘플 영상은 제 4집 엘범 "Sweet Dreams"의 수록곡 중 하나인 "You are my angel" 입니다. 곁에서 예쁜 딸을 항상 보다 보니 개인적으로 음악적 영감이 중간 중간 많이 떠오릅니다. 연애할 때와는 전혀 다른 사랑의 감정인데, 이게 정말로 제 삶을 윤택하게 만들어주고 음악적 영감도 끈임없이 가져다 주는 것 같아요. 제 아내는 왜 자기를 위한 곡은 몇 개 없냐며 투덜거리는 하지만 그래도 제 딸을 생각할 때 마음 차분해 지는 멜로디들이 더 자주 나오는 것 같습니다 ㅎㅎ
영상에 사용한 세팅은 아래 이미지를 참고하시기 바랍니다. 메인 볼륨을 0.0db까지 올리고 Waves L1 Ultramaximaizer로 살짝만 더 당겨 주었습니다. 또한 벨로시티 커브도 전혀 만지지 않고 그 외 외부 플러그인도 사용하지 않았습니다.
라이트 버전이지만 소리는 전혀 가볍지 않습니다. 지난번 크리스마스 세일을 놓쳐서 풀 버전은 구입은 못했지만 다음 프로모션이 있을 때 바로 구입을 할 예정입니다. 그만큼 충분히 좋은 인상을 저에게 준 악기인 것 같습니다.

Hi Keunyoung, Thanks for the review. I just purchased the $10 version on a Black Friday sale and I agree with your review - I like the sound but the dynamic range is limited. Did you ever buy the full version? If so, does that actually have a wider dynamic range or do the additional velocities just smooth the transitions between the different velocities? I want to be able to play ppp to fff, but the $10 version won't do that - just something like mp to ff. Curious if the full version is better.
ReplyDeleteHie SeaDave. I do own the full version of Walker Concert D. IMHO, it definitely has the wider dynamic range and also as the smoother transitions than the lite one. About fff expression, I can say yes, but about ppp, I'm not sure if this can express it as I lkie the strong and bright tone of the piano VST. (I usually move the velocity curve a little upward everytime I play.)

I like the bright tone as well, brighter than most Steinway Ds. See my comment below, I was using the default preset but the classical snapshot is much better for dynamics and I'll customize that some more.
DeleteI may have spoken too soon. The dynamic range is much better with the Classical Performance snapshot and it can also be adjusted somewhat in the response section.
ReplyDeleteI see. But the full version's expression is much broader than the lingt one. Also it sounds much fuller. I haven't tried sanpshots so far, I gotta try it now. Thanks for the good info SeaDave. :D
DeleteI'm new to Kontakt, apparently the snapshots are really presets (which I didn't originally see). You can save your own and you don't need to save all the samples so it's more efficient than saving your settings as a new instrument.
