Hello piano lovers. Can you name only one grand piano from YAMAHA? Probably everybody would say C7 Grand. YAMAHA C7 Grand is one of the most loved pianos by many artists along with Steinway Model D Grand. When you check out the sampled or modeled pianos among tens of thousands of piano libraries, you would see the Steinway Model D and YAMAHA C7 Grand most.

PV released Production Grand 2 quite long time ago, but now I got to test and play it. Of course, it sampled YAMAHA C7 Grand piano as I mentioned above. The first impression of the GUI made me think that it looks so professional and definitely it is not for the beginners. When you see those knobs and parameters that engineers may like, you may feel dizzy if you are not familiar with them.

It has 8 microphone perspectives so that you can maneuver the sound as you wish. If you are lost in too many sound making options, using presets is going to be a good option as it also provides a variety of tones.

Let's talk about the sound. The sound itself is so amazing from crystal clear high registers to warm and firm low registers. I didn't feel any type of saturated feel in the overall sound as many piano VST makers have their own unique sound color and texture depending on the recording gears and the studios. Of course, PV also has their own sound tone and texture regardless of the piano they sampled, but I think PV tried their best to minimize their own color and just focus on the sampled piano's characteristics itself.

IMHO, this VST would be suitable for pop and jazz style music as the clear tone may mix through perfectly well among many instruments. And the overall sound is so firm and solid that results in a good body feel.

About the dynamics. Mmm... We need to talk. From mid to low registers, it feels ok. but in the high register, it sounds a bit compressed when played with a strong velocity. I saw some posts regarding the dynamics issue in Piano Forum a few years ago, but still, it is not fixed through the updates I guess. If you are looking for a piano VST with the best dynamic ranges, you may want to check out other sample libraries. But honestly, for me, it feels just ok as I don't need much dynamics like classical piano players.

In the sample video, I played "A Lover's Concerto" which is one of my father's favorite pop songs. Throughout the song, I played it with mp to f  velocities most of the time. In high registers, the hammer noise and body give such an amazing tone that you may not want to stop your playing. About the setting, please check below images. Plus I used Waves L1 Ultramaximizer and H-Reverb for the final result.

피아노를 사랑하시는 분들 안녕하세요 ^^ 피아니스트 송근영입니다.

오늘 리뷰를 해 볼 피아노 가상악기는 괴물같은 엄청난 용량으로 유명한 Production Voice 사의 Production Grand 2 Gold입니다. Production Grand 1 시리즈에서도 야마하 C7 그랜드 피아노를 샘플링을 했는데, 그 후속작도 똑같은 야마하 C7 그랜드를 샘플링 하였습니다. 물론 소리 자체도 굉장히 좋게 업그레이드가 되었고요. 저는 직접 Production Grand 1을 사용해 보지는 못했지만 사운드 자체만 보더라도 Production Grand 2 의 사운드가 압도적으로 좋은 것 같습니다.

Production Voices 사의 홈페이지에 가보면 Production Grand 2 Gold의 용량이 약 140기가가 된다고 나오지만 이 사이즈는 콘탁 샘플로 압축되기 전의 용량이고 실제로 하드에서 차지하는 용량은 약 60기가 정도가 됩니다. 요즘은 100기가를 훌쩍 넘어가는 피아노 가상악기들이 많아져서 이제는 이 회사에서 출시되는 악기에 대해 용량괴물이라는 표현을 쓰기가 애매해졌습니다 ㅎㅎ

그럼 가장 중요한 사운드에 대해 얘기를 해볼까요? 솔직히 그동안 샘플링된 야마하 C7 중에 제일 명료하고 사실적인 톤을 가지고 있는 것 같습니다. Keyscape 같은 후보정이 되고 제작사의 색깔이 많이 들어간 사운드도 좋지만 음악을 듣는 청자 입장이 아닌 연주하는 연주자 입장에서는 확실히 이 악기가 연주자들에게는 더 매력이 있어 보입니다. 물론 어쿠스틱 그랜드가 가진 모든 표현을 느낄 수는 없지만 사운드만큼은 어느 정도 대리만족을 느낄 수 있을 것이라고 봅니다.

이 악기는 바디감도 굉장히 좋습니다. 전 음역대에서 어쿠스틱한 톤이 마구 나와주고 고음 부분에서 조용하고 약한 연주에서는 특히 해머노이즈 소리가 부각이 되게 되는데 정말 끝내주네요. 연주를 멈추고 싶지 않을 정도입니다. 중저음도 소리가 굉장히 단단하고 알맹이 있는 소리를 내줍니다. 그래서 밴드 음악의 믹스에서도 잘 뻗어나오지 않을까 생각을 해봅니다.

그 다음 다이나믹입니다. 이것만큼은 이 악기에서 꼭 집고 넘어가야 될 것 같습니다. 이 악기 출시때부터 줄곧 이슈가 되어 왔던 내용입니다. 강한 벨로시티에서 컴프걸린 사운드가 나오는데 아직까지 업데이트를 통해 해결이 되지 않았습니다. (제가 업데이트 정보를 놓칠 수도 있으니 혹시 이 부분이 개선이 되었다면 알려주시면 정말 감사하겠습니다. ) 다이나믹은 피아노 가상악기를 고를 때 정말 중요한 요소 중 하나입니다. 저같이 팝 음악과 뉴에이지 음악을 주로 연주하는 경우에는 큰 불편함이 없지만 클래식 연주자들의  다이나믹한 연주에 있어서는 다소 불편함을 느낄 수 있으니 구매시 이 점 꼭 참고하시기 바랍니다.

첨부된 샘플을 한 번 들어보셨나요? 저희 아버지가 가장 좋아하시는 팝송이라 아버지를 위해 한 번 연주해 보았습니다. 자세한 세팅은 아래 이미지를 참고하시면 되고요, 참고로 Waves L1 Ultramaximizer와 Waves H-Reverb를 추가로 사용하여 최종 사운드를 만들었습니다. 주로 mp에서 f의 세기로 연주를 했는데 이 정도 세기에서는 개인적으로 다이나믹과 관련된 불편함을 크게 느끼지는 못했던 것 같으니 참고 바랍니다.

그리고 참고로 아래 악기들은 제가 생각하는 괜찮은 YAMAHA C7 그랜드 피아노 샘플링 가상악기들이니 궁금하신 분들은 한 번 리뷰 천천히 읽어보시기 바랍니다. 같은 C7 그랜드이더라도 각각 다른 맛이 있습니다.
