How to make Garritan CFX sound better?_Garritan CFX 소리를 좋게 만드는 방법?

Settings For My Garritan Abbey Road Studios CFX Concert Grand(Full Ver.)

Hi piano lovers. This is Pianist Keunyoung Song. Many people ask me how I set my Garritan CFX for recording and performing on the stage. I guess many people like Garritan CFX sound because of its clarity and warmth. So I prepared this post to share my own setting for Garritan CFX Full Version.

Is there any secret in my setting?

No, I don't think so. Garritan CFX itself has the perfect tone I need for my play and expressions. I mostly play the Pop and New Age types of songs with the Garritan CFX.

Things to keep in mind

As I mentioned, my plays lean toward New Age and Pop types of music which means I have a small range of dynamics when playing. If you are a classical piano player, this setting might not suit your needs. And most of the time you will hear the peaks or clipping noises when you hit the keys hard. (For example, FF and higher)

So please keep your dynamics range suitable for pop and New Age if you want to use my setting.

And for Garritan CFX Lite users, I would recommend upgrading to the full version. The extra ambient mic makes a huge difference in tone. This setting is for Full version users.

My PC and Master Keyboard

1. PC : Lenovo G50-80

2. Master Keyboard : YAMAHA MOX8 & ROLAND FP-30

3. Audio Interface : Built-in Interface in MOX8

Settings for the VST

1. I use the classic default setting for most of my plays. We can start from this setting.

Go to "Preset" - "Full" - "Classic" - "Default"

2. Please change the "Stereo Image" to "Performer". It will give you a much wider and warmer tone.

3. Click the "EQ buttons" for both Close and Ambient outputs. And turn each knob to the level shown in the image. In this way, you will get much fuller and warmer tones.

4. Raise all volume faders till the end(Till 0db). By doing this, you will get around -17~-18 Long Term LUFS. (Still not enough for streaming purposes) If you play classical songs, please put down the volume faders to your taste. You may get frequent peaks when all the volume faders are on the top.

5. Velocity Curve: I don't touch it. But if the sound from high registers is too harsh, you may put it down a little.

Setting for 3rd party plugins

1. Reverb : I always use Waves H-Reverb for all of my recordings. From the default, I maneuvered only "Dry/Wet" knob. You can see how little I put the "wet value" on this plugin. Because the Garritan CFX's ambient mic already gives me enough room sounds I need.

2. Maximizer : Waves L1 Ultramaximizer is one of my favorite limiters. You can apply this setting to Waves L2 too. But L2 would sound fatter and less clear than L1.

About "Out Ceiling" level, I put it to -0.3 for Youtube uploads, but I put it up to -1.0 for album releases to have enough headroom to prevent unexpected peaks when converting to each streaming service, for example, Spotify, Apple Music, and more. By doing this, you would get around -12~-15 Long Term LUFS which is suitable for streaming and Youtube uploads.

Listen To Sample Songs With This Setting

This song is "Always" and wrote this song thinking of my family. This song is from my 18th Album and I used exactly the same settings shown in this post except for the velocity curve. I put it down a little for high registers.

This song is "Gift", from my 17th Album. I used the same settings shown above. Does it sound way clearer than "Always"? The velocity curve makes a huge difference in your tone.

The last song is "Edelweiss" from The Sound of Music. Also used the same settings without any velocity curve change.

안녕하세요. 피아니스트 송근영 입니다. 제가 주로 사용하는 피아노 가상악기는 Garritan CFX 입니다. 음장감도 충분히 길고 바디감이 좋아서 즐겨 사용하고 있는 악기 중 하나입니다. 많은 사람들이 제 세팅에 대해서 많은 질문을 주셔서 이렇게 포스트로 한 번 정리를 해봤습니다.

뭔가 특별한 비법이 있을까?

그랬으면 좋겠지만 사실 별다른 건 없습니다. 디폴트에서 조금만 조정을 하였고 나머지 외부 플러그인을 적용해서 믹스/마스터만 한 소리입니다. 뒤에서 더 자세히 설명을 드릴께요.

참고해야 될 점들

저는 주로 팝이나 뉴에이지 음악을 연주하는 사람입니다. 즉 연주의 다이나믹 범위가 클래식 보다는 훨씬 더 좁다는 이야기 입니다. 그래서 클래식을 연주하는 사람들에게는 제가 소개하는 세팅이 안 맞을 수 있습니다. 있는 힘껏 연주하게 되면 금방 소리가 0db를 넘어가게 되어 빨간색 peak가 뜨거나 클리핑 노이즈 등이 생길 가능성이 많습니다.

그리고 이 세팅 소개는 Garritan CFX Full 유저들을 위한 세팅입니다. Lite 사용자분들은 이 기회에서 풀버전으로 업그레이드 하는 것도 한 번 고려해 보시기 바랍니다. 풀버전에서 제공하는 Ambient Mic가 사운드 전반에 정말 큰 변화를 줍니다.

장비 환경

1. PC : Lenovo G50-80

2. 마스터 키보드 : YAMAHA MOX8 & ROLAND FP-30

3. 오디오 인터페이스 : MOX8 내장 인터페이스

가상악기 세팅

1. Preset : Full - Classic - Default 선택

클래식 디폴트를 사용하였습니다. 다른 프리셋들도 많이 있지만 저한테 이 기본 프리셋이 가장 잘 맞네요.

2. 왼쪽 하단에 있는 Stereo Image를 "Performer"로 바꿔주시면 됩니다. 이렇게 하면 스테레오 이미지가 넓어지면서 좀 더 따뜻한 소리를 내줍니다.

3. 중앙 상단에 있는 "EQ" 버튼을 눌러주시고 HI는 11시 방향, MID와 LOW는 1시 방향으로 돌려주세요. 이렇게 하면 좀 더 풍성하고 바디감 있는 소리를 내줍니다.

4. 오른쪽에 있는 페이더 3개를 모두 끝까지 올려주세요. 제가 위에서도 언급을 했지만 이렇게 하면 클래식 연주는 좀 어려울 수 있습니다. 특히 FFF 같은 표현은 peak가 뜰 가능성이 많습니다. 하지만 여기까지만 따라오셔도 약 -17~-18 Long Term LUFS를 얻을 수 있습니다. 스트리밍이나 유튜브 업로드 목적으로는 조금 작은 볼륨이지만 혼자 연습하기에는 괜찮은 볼륨값 입니다.

5. 벨로시티 커브는 왠만하면 건드리지 않습니다. 다만 이 경우에는 명료도가 좋아지는 대신 고음에서 조금 귀를 때리는 소리가 있을 수 있습니다. 이 경우에는 벨로시티 커브에서 중고음 대역을 약간만 내려주시면 됩니다.

외부 플러그인 세팅

1. Reverb : Waves H-Reverb를 사용하였습니다. 디폴트 상태에서 오른쪽 하단에 있는 "Dry/Wet" 값만 살짝 줬습니다. 기본적으로 Garritan CFX의 Ambient Mic가 충분한 공간감을 내줍니다. 그래서 외장 리버브는 아주 살짝만 값을 주었습니다.

2. 맥시마이저 : Waves L1 Ultramaximizer를 사용했고요, "Out Ceiling" 값은 -0.3을 주었습니다. 유튜브에 올릴 때는 이 값으로 하셔도 크게 문제는 없으나 앨범 발매와 같이 스트리밍 목적을 위해서는 이 값을 -0.5 이상 올려주는 것을 추천합니다. 각 서비스 별로 음원을 컨버팅 할 때 예상치 못한 추가 피크를 방지하기 위함입니다.

그럼 이 세팅으로 녹음된 소리를 한 번 들어볼까요?

이 곡은 제 18번째 앨범의 수록곡 중 하나인 "Always" 입니다. 위에 제시한 세팅을 그대로 사용했습니다. 단 여기서 벨로시티 커브를 중고역대만 약간 밑으로 내려줘서 좀 더 부드러운 소리가 나오게 만져봤습니다.

이 곡은 제 17번째 앨범 타이틀곡인 "Gift" 입니다. 이 곡은 위에 제시한 세팅을 그대로 따라서 했습니다. 벨로시티 커브도 별도로 만지지 않았습니다. 소리가 좀 더 맑고 밝죠?

마지막 곡은 제가 정말 좋아하는 영화 Sound of Music의 "에델바이스" 입니다. 이 곡도 위에 제시한 세팅 그대로 녹음한 곡입니다. 벨로시티 커브는 건들지 않았습니다.
